Home at Last! Playing with Poems

IMG-4021.JPG

Now that so many of us are at home –

Here’s a fun way to write a short poem about being at home.

It’s a ‘cinquain’ – don’t worry about the unusual name – It’s no worse than tyrannosaurus rex or diplodocus! A cinquain is not a dinosaur but a way to write a poem in five lines. Here’s one I just wrote:

Home Cinquain

Home,

Mum’s home

and Dad’s home

we’re all here now.

Together.

Can you see that in the five lines it has one word in the first line, two in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and - surprise! - back to one word in the fifth line? I suppose I’m cheating a bit by having ‘we’re’ in the fourth line. Is it one word or two? I think it’s squished into one word and anyway writing rules are really just a way to get going so it doesn’t really matter. Like to have a go? Get a pencil or pen and paper and I’ll start you off, you can copy what I’ve written:

Home,

we’re here

all together now

(you put 4 words here)

(you put one word here).

Easy isn’t it? Here’s another starter:

I’m

at home

(you put 3 words here)

(you put 4 words here)

(you put one word here).

Now it’s your turn to write a whole cinquain! You could write lots of these little poems - and they could be about anything you like.

How about writing five cinquains on the same subject? 5 x 5 = a mini poetry collection!
